4-party rally on Sept 9 for Khaleda's release
BNP-led four-party alliance will hold rallies in the capital and elsewhere in the country on September 9 to press home its demands that include unconditional release of former prime minister Khaleda Zia.
Other demands are sending BNP leader Tarique Zia abroad for treatment, lifting the state of emergency, holding parliamentary elections ahead of other elections, bringing down the prices essentials to acceptable level and scrapping the Representation of People Order (Amendment) Ordinance.
BNP Secretary General Khandaker Delwar Hossain announced the fresh programme at a meeting of the alliance at the Engineers Institution auditorium. The meeting was organised to protest police action on the alliance's human chain on August 27.
Delwar urged the nationalist forces and the people to prepare for an effective movement to realise the demands.
Referring to the public plight caused by price spirals, the BNP leader said, “The people cannot be suppressed by threats and guns as they are badly hit by the escalating prices of commodities.”
He warned, “If the government wants to push us towards chaos by obstructing our future programme, it (government) will be held responsible for any eventuality.”
He alleged that false cases were filed against Khaleda Zia and the government could not yet prove any of the cases.
Addressing the meeting, Jamaat Secretary General Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojahid cautioned that if the government resorted to dilly-dallying over the release of Khaleda Zia and general election in December, then the people would take up tougher programme. “The government,” he said, “will not be able to tackle that situation.”
The meeting was addressed, among others, by BJP Chairman Andalib Rahman, Secretary General Shamim Al Mamun, IOJ Secretary General Abdul Latif Nezami and Khelafat Majlis Secretary General Ahmed Abdul Qader.
