'Fully ratify CEDAW'
Rupantar and Swift Network, two NGOs, yesterday demanded implementation of National Women's Development Policy (NWDP) and decisions of Convention on Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW).
The demand was made in a press conference at Khulna Press Club.
Chairperson of Swift Network Swapan Guha in his written statement said non-implementation of CEDAW charter adopted by the UNO on December 18, 1979 is a flagrant violation of Constitution of Bangladesh.
He said the charter was signed by 185 member countries of UNO.
The three objectives which CEDAW charter stands for are proper recognition to various roles of women being played for development-related works, removal of discrimination, political and economic activities and creation of a congenial atmosphere for establishing equal rights of men and women.
The 2 NGO's placed an eight-point charter of demand before the government. They included increase of women seats in parliament through direct election.
