Defence lawyers asked to submit HC stay order on Sept 8
The trial court, dealing with Tk 21 crore bribery case against detained BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Tarique Rahman and former state minister for home Lutfozzaman Babar and six others, yesterday asked the defence lawyers to submit the certified copy of the High Court (HC) stay order on September 8.
Judge Shahed Noor Uddin of the Special Court-3 set the date after the defence lawyers had informed him about the stay.
As the court sat at 11:50am, defence lawyers told the court that they came to know over phone that the HC granted bail to the accused Babar and Abu Sufian, director of the East West Property Development Ltd, a Bashundhara concern, and also stayed the case proceedings.
They also said the hearing on a writ petition filed by Tarique seeking stay of the case is awaiting with the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC).
Of the accused, Babar and Abu Sufian were in the dock.
Tarique was not produced before the court since he has been exempted from appearing in person during the trial proceedings.
The rest are on the run.
Earlier on July 14, the court framed charges against Tarique, elder son of former premier Khaleda Zia, Babar and the others.
The ACC filed the case on October 4 last year accusing six people of bribery to cover up the murder of Bashundhara Group executive Humayun Kabir Sabbir whose body was found outside a building in Bashundhara residential area on July 5, 2006.
The six are Babar, Bashundhara Group Chairman Ahmed Akbar Sobhan alias Shah Alam, his two sons Shafiat Sobhan Sanvir and Sadaat Sobhan, Abu Sufian and Mia Nur Uddin Apu.
The names of Tarique and former BNP lawmaker Qazi Saleemul Huq Kamal were included in the charge sheet after an investigation found their involvement in the bribery.
