Ex-MP Lotus Kamal sued for tax evasion
The National Board of Revenue (NBR) yesterday filed a case against detained former Awami League lawmaker Mostafa kamal (Lotus Kamal) for dodging Tk 1 crore in income tax from 1991 to 2006.
NBR Deputy Tax Commissioner Zakir Hossain Akand filed the case with the Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court, Dhaka.
After hearing the case, Judge Mohammad Azizul Haque recorded the statement of the complainant, took it into cognisance, and directed the jail authorities to produce Lotus Kamal before the court on August 28.
The judge said he passed the order as the charges brought against him under the Income Tax Ordinance 1984 were found to be true.
In his statement, the complainant said Lotus Kamal had concealed information of wealth worth about Tk 4 crore in his wealth statement submitted to the NBR.
Moreover, Lotus Kamal, an accused in more than 10 cases, had repeatedly given false information to the income tax department about his real income and expenditure, the complainant said.
