Sylhet criminals to be brought back from abroad

List of 20 staying in UK, US sent to police headquarters

As part of initiative to bring back people with serious criminals records from abroad, Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) has sent to the police headquarters a preliminary list of 20 such people staying in the UK and USA.
“We will seek assistance from the Interpol through the police headquarters and Ministry of Home to bring those criminals back to the country as soon as possible. Collection of the detailed information of the targeted people including their passport number and photo is almost complete. The first list of 20 criminals will be sent to the UK and USA while the next one may be sent to India and to Saudi Arabia,” SMP Commissioner Syed Toufique Uddin Ahmed said yesterday.
“We are also probing how the criminals accused in cases managed to get passports for leaving the country. Of course some police officials had issued verification certificates for issuing passports to them. Moreover, they had to undergo checking by immigration police. A list of over 20 police officials involved in such activities has already been prepared and they will not be spared,” the SMP commissioner said.
About 250 people, accused and warranted in cases filed with Sylhet Kotwali and South Surma police stations, are staying abroad to evade arrest and legal action, police sources said, adding that about 150 of them are directly involved with political parties including BNP, Jatiya Party, and Jamaat-e-Islami.
The list includes convicts and accused in serious crimes like murder, rape, robbery and keeping illegal arms.
