Plainclothes policewomen to be deployed at shopping malls
Several hundred plainclothes policewomen will be deployed at the important shopping malls, markets and strategic points in the city as part of beefed up security measures to check robbery and snatching during Ramadan.
Besides, around 150 law enforcers in motorbikes will patrol the city round the clock.
This special measure will assist the joint forces, Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) and the police in curbing various crimes such as robbery, theft, mugging and cheating, sources said.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has already formed a new branch, Special Women Police Contingent (SWPC) having 24 members, to nab women criminals as their number is increasing.
This contingent would co-opt more policewomen according to the needs in Ramadan.
Posing as buyers, the plainclothes policewomen will stay alert at markets, shopping malls and other places. Besides, they will also try to trap the criminals through various means.
"The new measures -- deployment of policewomen and the motorbikes -- are taken to tighten security ahead of Eid," said DMP Commissioner Naim Ahmed.
Although the SWPC comprises only 24 personnel, it would co-opt more policewomen also to help the regular forces in curbing crimes, he added.
"The plainclothes policewomen will be deployed at all important and strategic points, including markets and shopping malls," he said, adding that the policemen in motorbikes would stay alert in mugging-prone areas.
He also said the DMP has already asked all the 33 police stations to start round-the-clock patrolling with three motorbikes. The number would go up ahead of Eid.
Assistant Commissioner of the Detective Branch Sadira Khatun, who currently leads the SWPC, said, "We will stay alert at markets, shopping malls and other places, posing as buyers. Besides, we will also try to trap criminals through various means."
Lt Col Gulzar Uddin Ahmed, additional director General of Rab, said, "We have already taken the decision to deploy the highest number of law enforcers, including both the plainclothes and striking forces, from the first day of Ramadan."
The forces will remain vigilant 24 hours in the mugging-prone areas, he added.
A recent DMP research reveals that more than 300 groups of muggers are active in snatching at around 500 spots across the capital to mug people with new techniques everyday.
