A barge carrying 475 tonnes of urea capsized in Passur in the early hours of yesterday, partially damaging the consignment worth about Tk two core.
The urea contained in of 9,496 bags was imported by Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCCI) from China.
The accident occurred at about 2 am as the barge, Rimi, collided head-on with a launch, official sources said.
The consignment was damaged as the barge developed cracks in haul in the accident.
The barge loaded the fertiliser from Korean flag bearer MV Doc Chun.
The sunken barge was however salvaged this morning by Agani Prahari, a rescue ship of Mongla Port Authority (MPA).
Owner of the barge Md. Wahiduzzaman said that his employees worked tirelessly to pump out water from the barge.
The crew said the fertilisers were being taken to Noapara warehouse in Abhoynagar upazila of Jessore district.
The water-soaked fertilizer bags could not be not removed to safer place from the damaged barge till about 7 pm yesterday, sources said.
Sources said most of the fertiliser will melt if the water can not be removed or the bags salvaged soon.
MPA Member (Operation) Lutfor Rahman said the accident was minor and had done 'very little damage' to the fertiliser.
