Extortion Case

HC order on Sheikh Selim's writ today

The High Court (HC) will deliver an order today on a writ petition filed by detained Awami League (AL) presidium member Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim challenging the legality of the initiation and continuation of the extortion case filed by businessman Azam J Chowdhury against him.
After concluding the hearing on the petition, an HC bench comprising Justice Khademul Islam Chowdhury and Justice Mashuque Hosain Ahmed yesterday fixed the date for passing the order.
Selim's counsel Barrister Shafique Ahmed told the court that the trial of this case had to be completed within 90 days after submission of the charge sheet in this case, but the trial court had not completed trial within the stipulated 90 days and that is why the case could not run at the trial court.
Additional Attorney General (AAG) Mansur Habib opposed the petition.
Azam J Chowdhury filed the case against Selim with Gulshan Police Station on June 13, 2007.
Later, AL president Sheikh Hasina and her sister Sheikh Rehana were involved in the case.
The plaintiff in his case statement stated that the accused took around Tk 3 crore in extortion from him in exchange for awarding him work permit for a power-plant project during the premiership of Hasina.
