Biman to buy 'useless' DC10 at $2 million
The Board of Biman Bangladesh Airlines Ltd decided on Wednesday to buy the DC10-30 aircraft, which it leased in January 2000, with its three damaged engines at a cost of $2.1 million.
Although the lease expired on July 28, Biman could not send the aircraft back to its proprietor Pegasus Aviation because of the out-of-order engines.
The airline will have to spend about $6-7 million to buy three engines and make the plane operational, a Biman official told The Daily Star yesterday, adding that a new DC10 costs about $5 million.
Biman leased the DC10 for $1.47 lakh a month.
During the seven and a half years' operation of the aircraft, Biman had to pay Pegasus Aviation Tk 91.16 crore, which is much higher than the cost of a new Dc10.
