7 JMB men get life
A Barisal court yesterday sentenced seven activists of banned Islamist outfit Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh to life imprisonment in a case filed for the series bomb blasts on August 17, 2005 in front of Barisal Central Jail.
The seven were also fined Tk 10,000 each, in default of which they will have to serve an additional year in prison.
The court also acquitted seven other accused and ordered to release them unless there are separate cases pending against them.
The convicts are Abu Yusuf Majumdar, Abdus Sobhan, M Giasuddin, M Sarwar Hossian, Abdur Rahim, Zahid Babu, and Ziaur Rahman Zia. Of them, Sarwar, Rahim, Babu and Zia are still at large.
Judge Rabiul Hassan of Barisal Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal handed down the verdict while 10 out of 14 accused in the case were present in the dock.
Sub Inspector Mosharraf Hossain of Barisal Kotwali Police Station filed the case on August 17, 2005 after consecutive bomb explosions in front of the Barisal Central Jail.
On December 25 the same year, Sub Inspector Shshir Kumar Pal of Detective Branch submitted charge sheet accusing 14 individuals.
