Two muggers were held while fleeing on a motorbike after snatching about Tk 2 lakh from the officials of a textile mill in the city's Uttara area yesterday morning.
Police also seized a pistol, six rounds of bullets and Tk 1700 of the snatched money from their possession.
However, their accomplice made away with the money on a motorcycle.
The muggers, who were injured after being shot by police, were admitted to Pongu Hospital at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar.
They are Hafez Miah, 30, and Aminul Islam, 25.
Saiful Alam Chowdhury, officer-in-charge of Uttara police station, said three muggers waylaid Mrinal Sarkar, managing director of Dania Textile Mills in Gazipur, and his Quality Control Manager Abdur Razzaq while they were on their way to Mrinal's residence at Sector-4 in Uttara at about 10:45am after drawing Tk 1.92 lakh from Dutch Bangla Bank at Sector-1.
“When the muggers tried to snatch the money at gunpoint, the victims started screaming. Local people and police on patrol rushed to the spot. But the muggers opened fire on the policemen, compelling them to retaliate,” the OC said.
“Police caught two of the three muggers, but another one speeded away on the motorbike with the money,” he added.
The OC also said that during the scuffle between the muggers and the victims, about Tk 1700 fell on the road, which police recovered.
