'Elect honest, competent persons'
Speakers at press conference organised by People's Forum on Anti-corruption has called upon the city dwellers to vote for the honest and competent people in Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) polls.
Announcing a three-day programme from today, the speakers at the conference on Tuesday afternoon said they have organized leaders who played a bright role in the Liberation War and in democratic movements in Sylhet region to raise voice against corrupt leaders.
The three-day programme includes special prayer session at Ramkrishna Mission, Sylhet, raising balloons appealing for voting honest and competent candidates, Khatm e Quran, milad and prayer session at the mosque attached to the shrine of Hajrat Shahjalal today, special prayers at all mosques in the city after Juma prayers tomorrow and rally, blood donation and token hunger strike at Sylhet Central Shahid minar on August 2 to raise awareness for electing honest candidates.
The city dwellers had been deprived of minimum amenities although there had been elections and elected people, speaker said at the press conference.
There has been no change in the education sector while the elected people failed to recover the grabbed natural canals flowing through the city, former lawmaker Lutfur Rahman said in his written statement.
“As a better voter list with photos has been prepared this time, we can expect a fair election. The people will make best use of their option for having a better and transparent election. The people's verdict can save us from the politics of musclemen and black money,” he said.
Among others, former lawmaker Inamul Haque Chowdhury Bir Protik, former lawmaker Shah Azizur Rahman, district Muktijoddha Sangsad commander Subrata Chakravarty Jewel, former district AL general secretary Shah Modabbir Ali, former government pleaders Abdul Mukit Chowdhury and Bandhu Gopal Das, district JSD chief Kolondar Ali, district Gano Forum chief Aftab Hossain Chowdhury, city Sramik League chief Zafar Chowdhury and former district Chhatra League secretary Foizul Islam Lashkar addressed the press conference.
