Students block road, demand arrest of attackers
Around one hundred agitating students of Rajshahi University (RU) yesterday blocked traffic on Dhaka-Rajshahi highway for over one hour demanding arrest and exemplary punishment of the salesmen who severely beat up a RU student at Rajshahi RDA market.
Earlier on Monday, a group of Salesman severely beat up a RU student over a trifle matter at Rajshahi RDA market when he refused to purchase a shirt.
The injured student was identified as Jashim, a second year student of Department of Islamic History and Culture of the university.
The students kept the road blocked from 12:00noon to 1:00pm felling trees. They also staged a sit-in demonstration on the road demanding arrest and exemplary punishment of the responsible salesmen.
During the demonstration, polices became infuriated as chief adviser of the caretaker government was then attending a regional dialogue on democracy at Rajshahi Medical College auditorium.
The agitating students also tried to vandalise buses and trucks on the road but teachers, assistant proctor and police officials rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
They assured the students that the responsible salesmen will be arrested within 24 hours and the injured student will get compensation.
Later, the students met proctor and police officials at proctor office and gave 24 hours ultimatum to arrest the responsible salesmen and to ensure security of general students on the campus and in the city.
They also threatened to launch a tougher movement against the university authorities if the responsible salesmen are not punished.
