Tangail journos demand jailer's removal
Journalists in Tangail have demanded immediate removal of district Jail Superintendent Sagir Miah.
They made the demand at a meeting at the Tangail Press Club auditorium on Wednesday night.
The journalists condemned Sagir, the head of the committee formed to probe the assault on a reporter of The Daily Star by jail guards, for terming the attack on the journalist 'drama' in a rejoinder.
They also decided to submit a memorandum to the home ministry through the Tangail deputy commissioner on Sunday demanding immediate removal of the jail super and neutral investigation into the incident.
They alleged that Sagir is trying to save the jailer and the jail guards, who assaulted the journalist, by hiding the real facts.
The meeting, chaired by Tangail Press Club president Ataur Rahman Azad, was attended, among others, by its former presidents Dr Mohammad Kamruzzaman and Khan Mohammad Khaled, and general secretary of the press club Zafar Ahmed.
Following instructions from Jailer Nazrul Islam, several jail guards swooped on Mirza Shakil, Tangail correspondent of The Daily Star, while he was collecting information on irregularities at the district jail on May 24. Shakil sustained injuries to the chest, back and neck.
Two jail guards were stand released and temporarily suspended in connection with the incident and a three-member probe body led by Sagir Miah was formed the same day.
