Illegal structures on road to be demolished in Ctg

Concerned authorities in the port city yesterday decided to evict the illegal structures on both the sides of the city's busiest Agrabad Access Road to address the frequent traffic congestion in the area.
Representatives from Chittagong Development Authority (CDA), Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) and Department of Housing took the decision after visiting the area yesterday afternoon.
The 2.5-kilometre Agrabad Access Road from Badamtali intersection to Port Connecting Road was scheduled to be widened up to 120 feet.
But illegal construction of high-rise markets, residential houses, schools and government structures have occupied maximum portion of the road that results in serious traffic jam during peak hours.
The occupants include Southland Centre owned by Latif Anwar, MDC Plaza owned by Maulana Group, BCIC, BSCIC and T&T School and residential area.
CCC Executive Engineer Rafiqul Islam said total structure of the five-storey MDC Plaza was built on the road while the Southland Centre occupied 15 feet to south side and eight feet to east side of the road.
CDA Authorisation Officer Mohammad Jasim Uddin said occupants encroached the road violating the CDA rules.
The occupants were sent notices earlier and final notices will also be sent soon before demolishing the structures, he added.
