English language
I agree with Mr. Andaz regarding "Babu" English(Letters, 29/04/08).
The success of a language depends on the accessibility and adaptability which explains the success of the English language today. It certainly goes beyond her colonial past. It is about to reach its billionth word with the global usage of IT, science, media and communication. English must be used in aircraft and spaceship manuals, air traffic control, naval instructions and communications as an international standard. One of the main reasons our mighty neighbour India is fiercely emerging as a global power is the usage of English, despite having 22 official languages, whereas Hindi is not far behind mostly due to Bollywood, which has a global audience and releases more films annually than Hollywood. The word 'Hinglish' (Hindi+English) is now a recognised word in the UK and is soon going to be included in the Oxford Dictionary. Bollywood film awards now regularly take place in the UK and Thames Valley University in London has started a new course to train future Bollywood actors, directors and technicians.
We, as a nation need to wake up to the reality, focus and reflect globally beyond our boundary if we want to take our treasured Bangla language forward. Unless we stop dwelling in the past and look forward to the future with the rest of the global community, we will have no choice but be left behind as a nation!
