Two prisoners' groups clash at Feni jail: 50 injured
At least 50 people, including two jail guards, were injured in a clash between two groups of prisoners at the district jail yesterday morning.
Jail sources said the clash between the under-trial and convicted prisoners broke out on the second floor of the jail at about 8:00am over establishing supremacy.
According to the sources, the under-trial prisoners, led by Chhatra Dal cadre Daudul Islam Minar, had been trying for the last few days to establish supremacy over the convicted prisoners. They also had a heated exchange of words on Friday night.
Yesterday morning, the two groups attacked each other with firewood taken from the jail kitchen, leaving at least 48 inmates injured.
When the jail guards tried to quell the situation, the prisoners swooped on them, injuring Abu Taher and Abdus Sobhan injured. Later, police and joint forces brought the situation under control.
When contacted, Sarwar Jahan, physician of the district jail, said 35 of the injured prisoners were given first aid.
Jail-in- charge Magistrate Shahidul Islam said 15 prisoners were taken to Comilla Central Jail Hospital for treatment.
A three-member inquiry committee, headed by ADC Mominur Rashid Amin, has been formed. The committee has been asked to submit its report in a week.
At present, there are 65 convicted and 669 under-trial prisoners at the district jail.
