Bangladesh signs MoU on manpower export with Oman
Bangladesh and Oman yesterday signed two bilateral agreements on manpower and avoidance of double taxation with the aim of increasing manpower export to Oman and augmenting bilateral trade.
Foreign Adviser Dr Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury, now in Oman, and Minister of Manpower of Oman Dr Juma Al-Juma signed the memorandum of understanding (MoU) on manpower and the other deal on avoidance of double taxation.
After the signing of the agreements, Oman's Deputy Prime Minister Fahd bin Mahmoud Al-Said said, “Bangladeshi workers are welcome in Oman.”
He made the remark when the foreign adviser called on him at his office in Muscat, according to a message received in Dhaka.
“The signing of the two accords is a historic event,” Dr Iftekhar said to the media later. “These will not only allow more Bangladeshi workers to come to Oman and protect their interests but also expand trade and economic relations, particularly in air transportation,” he added.
Oman has resumed issuing visas to Bangladeshi workers after twelve years just recently. Dr Juma Al Juma visited Bangladesh in December last year and held talks with Dr Iftekhar, when they agreed to sign the manpower agreement to formalise the understandings.
The agreement was approved by the cabinets of Bangladesh and Oman earlier this month.
The foreign adviser also met separately with the Omani Manpower Minister Dr Juma Al Juma. He also visited the Police and Immigration headquarters in Muscat and held talks with the officials on relevant issues pertaining to Bangladeshi workforce.
On both occasions, he requested that Oman import more manpower from Bangladesh to satisfy its needs for foreign labour.
“I have also urged the Omani authorities to open an Embassy in Dhaka, which many countries have begun to do now. That will enable us to expand not only bilateral cooperation but also develop a strategic relationship in the international arena,” he said.
The foreign adviser held a meeting with the Bangladeshi community representatives in the afternoon and underscored the importance of their abiding by local rules and regulations, and regularisation of their status. He assured them that the Embassy would extend them all possible assistance.
