Take steps to hold free, fair polls soon
Speakers at a roundtable yesterday said formulation of the National Women Development Policy 2008 hurriedly proves that the caretaker government is trying to remain busy with things that are beyond its jurisdiction rather holding the parliamentary election in time.
The government is supposed to take necessary steps to hold a free and fair election. It is none of the present government's business to formulate policy and to create controversy in the society.
This government has no right to deal with any fundamental work, they added.
Bangladesh Sachetan Nagorik Samaj organised the roundtable titled 'Women Development Policy: In Context of Islam' at the National Press Club in the city with Justice Abdur Rouf in the chair.
Justice Abdur Rouf said the concept of equality should be viewed from the humanitarian angle. Islamic system is the duty-based legal system only.
Speaking as chief guest, Brig Gen (Retd) ASM Hannan Shah said if any development activities took place for women in the country, it took place during the period of the political government.
The people of the country are not against the development of women. If it would so, they would not allow stipend for girls in school level for more enrolment in higher secondary schools. Even they would not allow quota system in the parliament and women representative in local government system, said Editor of The New Nation Mostofa Kamal Majumder.
Former lawmaker Khondokar Mahtab Uddin, Helen Karim Khan, advocate Saifur Rahman, advocate Moshiul Alam, Associate Prof of BUET Sultana Razia and Darul Ihsan University teacher Kaniz Fatema also spoke.
