The next national budget will attach priority to agriculture to boost the country's food production, National Board of Revenue (NBR) Chairman Abdul Mazid said in Chittagong yesterday.
Speaking at a pre-budget meeting with businessmen at Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI), he also said the NBR would propose for rationalising tax-holiday period to encourage investment in productive sectors.
The NBR chairman said that there would be separate appellate tribunals for VAT and tax in Chittagong.
Responding to a demand raised by the businessmen at the meeting he also assured of taking measures for introducing round-the-clock assessment of import cargoes at Chittagong Customs House and installing scanning machines there soon.
The NBR chairman expressed satisfaction over the ongoing implementation of automation system that aims at checking irregularities and raising revenue collection at Chittagong Customs House.
He said implementation of the full automation would help NBR take decision on the pre-shipment inspection (PSI) companies against whom allegations of indulging in different irregularities are made frequently.
CCCI President Saifuzza-man Chowdhury, NBR members Mashrur Ahmad, Mohammad Alam, Emdadul Haque and Ahmed Ali and Customs Commissi-oner (Export) Margub Ahmed also took part in the discussion.
