World Press Freedom Day today
World Press Freedom Day 2008 will be observed today in the country as elsewhere across the world.
Throughout the world, May 3 serves as an occasion to inform the public of violations of rights to freedom of expression and as a reminder that many journalists brave death or jail to bring people their daily news.
To mark the day, different organisations have taken various programmes, including discussion and prize giving ceremony to journalists.
The National Association of Unesco Clubs in Bangladesh will arrange a discussion on “Press Freedom and Safety of Journalists” and a prize giving ceremony of the “Unesco Club Journalism Award-2008” at the National Press Club at 3:00pm today.
Former adviser to the caretaker government Dr Akbar Ali Khan will attend the function as the chief guest while Prof Muzaffer Ahmed will preside over the function.
Prof Dr Aminul Islam of Dhaka University, Dr M Mahmudul Hassan, secretary of Bangladesh National Commission for Unesco, Zaglul Ahmed Chowdhury, chief editor of BSS, Monjurul Ahsan Bulbul, president of BFUJ, and Shawkat Mahmud, president of National Press Club, will take part in the discussion.
The Unesco Club Journalism Award 2008 winner journalists are Mustafiz Shafi of the Daily Samokal, Monir Haider of the Daily Ittefaq, Shamim Al Amin of Channel one, Shahnaz Munni of ATN Bangla, Mahbuba Zannat of The Daily Star, Shahed Alam of NTV, Sakila Jesmin of Channel i, Mujib Masud of the Daily Jugantor, Ziaul Islam Zia of the daily Prothom Alo and Hassan Ahmed Chowdhury Kiron as a TV personality.
Besides, Mass-line Media Centre (MMC) will arrange a two-day programme, including discussion, at IDB Bhaban auditorium in the city from today.
Former adviser to the caretaker government Mahbubul Alam will attend the inaugural session as the chief guest. Women and Children Affairs Adviser Rasheda K Chowdhury will attend as the chief guest in the first session on the second day.
Different sessions of the two-day celebration would be chaired and participated by the prominent political leaders, public officials, lawyers, civil society members, media activists, academics and development practitioners.
