Rajshahi University gears up for Pahela Baishakh

Students and cultural organisations of Rajshahi University (RU) are getting ready for the Pahela Baishakh (the first day of the Bengali New Year) celebrations.
The students and teachers of Fine Arts Department have chalked out a weeklong colourful programme to celebrate the biggest secular festival in the country.
Towards the end of last week, many students of the department were seen working -- painting pictures, making replicas of animals and more -- on campus.
Biplob, a 4th year student of the department said, “We started getting ready for the Baishakhi celebration from the beginning of this month. Every year, the Pahela Baishakh programme arranged by the Department of Fine Arts is the main attraction on campus.”
Professor Amirul Momenin Chowdhury said that this year the Pahela Baishakh celebration will start with a grand procession at 8:00am at the department premises. Vice-Chancellor, RU, Professor Altaf Hossain will inaugurate the procession, according to sources.
This year the department will also arrange a three-day long Baishakhi fair -- offering food and traditional items -- at its premises.
During the fair, Gombhira -- a genre of folk songs -- will be presented.
Other departments are gearing up for the celebration as well. According to sources, the Marketing Department and their cultural organisation 'Biborton' are all set to arrange musical programmes featuring contemporary band songs and folk music at the Business Studies Building premises.
'Badhon' and 'Swajon', two voluntary blood donation organisations will arrange 'Panta and Pitha Utshab' at the Folklore Department premises on Pahela Baishakh.
Bishwa Shahitya Kendra will arrange a two day-long book exhibition on campus on the occasion. Sammilito Sanskritik Jote will hold a two day-long cultural programme.
Group of Liberal Debaters will arrange debate for teachers and students at the Mass Communication Department; eminent litterateur Professor Hassan Azizul Haque is set to attend the debate as the moderator.
