Pahela Baishakh celebrations in the urban areas started modestly in the late '60s. The last decade saw some interesting additions to this biggest secular festival in the country. Like Eid or Durga Puja, Pahela Baishakh now has a fashion trend devoted to it. Designers bring out their new collections on this occasion and there are ranges of Baishakhi-special clothes according to the affordability of different income groups.
Then there's food. Hardly anyone can deny the rustic charms of Panta-Ilish. There's also live music at different venues in the city and because it's a national holiday everyone gets the chance to catch up with their near and dear ones.
As a new Bengali year knocks on the door, some of the popular faces in the media shared their Pahela Baishakh plans with The Daily Star.
Mimi: I wish everybody Shubhonoboborsho. In the morning, I plan to attend Chhayanat's programme at Ramna, then the whole day I will be out visiting different people. After attending the Telehomes programme I will have lunch at Afroza Banu's place; she is an excellent cook. Pahela Baishakh is an entire day of freedom for me, when I am able to do anything I want- no shooting and no obligations. This year, I am wearing a red and white sautali saree. Because of the weather, I prefer to use very light make- up.
Sharmin Lucky: I have done a programme on ATN Bangla- Taal patar pakha. I start attending invitations from April 13. I will go to listen to baul songs at Amazon Club, and then visit different people and programmes. I will wear an off white saree with red border, beli phool. I enjoy pahela baishakh as I get to meet family- friends on this day.
Apurbo: From 9 to 1 in the afternoon, I will attend the Telehomes programme. I got a white Punjabi as a gift; I will wear that. I will hang out with my school, college and university friends, which is something I really enjoy. Also,we will have arrangements for panta ilish at home, so lunch will be with family.
Momo: I plan on staying home. The rest of the year I have a very busy schedule shooting and hardly get any time for others. On pahela baishakh, I will be with family and friends and chat with them. Around evening, I will go to the university campus and I will be wearing a traditional red and white cotton saree.
Balam: A joint album with my sister, Julie, is coming out this baishakh. I will try getting up early in the morning, get together with friends to chat, and listen to bangla music. Generally, I like wearing shirts and black is my favourite colour.
Monalisa: I will be out the entire day. I will perform at the programme of Standard Chartered Bank in the evening. I will wear a red and white saree in the morning, and dress up a bit in the evening. Pahela Baishakh is a great occasion to spend the day chatting with friends and family.
