PM to open Bera power plant during Pabna visit
Prime minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to inaugurate Bera peaking power plant during her visit to Pabna, scheduled for February 2.
According to the Power Development Board (PDB), the construction work of the 70-megawatt power plant started on August 5, 2010 at Brishalikha village in Bera upazila of the district.
South Korean company Hyundai Heavy Industries Ltd constructed the peaking power plant at a cost of Tk 542 crore and handed it over to the PDB in October last year.
“The Bera power plant went into operation from October last year and 70-megawatt electricity is being added to the national grid,†said Md Mohabbat Hossain, manager of the plant.
Although the plant started power generation in October last year, it will be officially opened on February 2, he added.
According to the deputy commissioner's office, the PM will arrive in Bera at around 12:00noon on February 2 and then inaugurate the 70-megawatt power plant and the new building of the municipality.
She will also open 12 other development projects that include the newly built Pabna Medical College building, a new campus of Pabna Open University, a newly built faculty bhaban of Pabna University of Science and Technology, Ishwardi-Dhalarchar rail line project, Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court building, Bhangura-Naogaon Road and regional passport office.
The prime minister will address a public meeting at Edward College ground at around 3:00pm on the day.
Meanwhile, Pabna Zila Parishad is in a hurry to finish renovation work of a road in the town ahead of the prime minister's visit.
A contractor has been given the work order to repair the 1300 metres road from Pabna Circuit House to Pabna Power House.
Md Khurshid Alam Khan, assistant engineer of Pabna Zila Parishad, said they have given work order to a contractor for road carpeting with brick chips on the concrete layer.
Locals, however, alleged that the standard of the repair work was not 'upto to the mark'.
