No party ticket in next polls
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said yesterday she has performance records of all ministers and MPs in her hands and is getting another survey on their activities done by government agencies and her "own men".
MPs who have bad image in their constituencies, engaged in negative activities and kept aloof from grassroots level leaders of the party will not get nomination in the next parliamentary polls, she was quoted by a number of Awami League lawmakers as saying at a meeting of the AL Parliamentary Party held at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.
Hasina, also chief of the ruling AL, reminded her party deputies that she had already carried out two surveys on their activities in their constituencies and has records of that.
“On the basis of the survey results, party nomination will be given in the next parliamentary polls,†AL legislator Ikbalur Rahim told The Daily Star quoting Hasina.
Urging the MPs who have distanced themselves from the party's grassroots leaders to mend their ways, Hasina said nomination in the next parliamentary election will also be given on the basis of vote of grassroots level leaders.
Earlier at an ALPP meeting on June 11 this year, the premier said she conducted a survey in all the constituencies of her party MPs. Citing the results of the survey, she said performance of 25-30 lawmakers was very poor and they risked losing the polls if held now, while another 25-30 MPs had 50-50 chance. The AL chief urged those MPs to work hard to better their records, according to sources.
In the last four years, Hasina repeatedly warned her party lawmakers against corruption, abuse of power and unruly behaviour. But no action was taken in this regard although the government and the ruling AL faced severe criticism for all this.
At yesterday's meeting, the AL chief urged party MPs to make people aware of the BNP-Jamaat-led opposition movement. She asked them to hold series of rallies and discussions in the month of victory, December, said party lawmaker MA Mannan.
“Keep the party's grassroots leaders and workers constantly alert about BNP-Jamaat's agitation,†he quoted Hasina as saying.
The AL president urged her party lawmakers to prepare in full swing for the next parliamentary polls.
Speaking at the meeting, some MPs demanded that the government grant them more funds and food grains for implementation of development projects in their constituencies. They mentioned that they had made various pledges before the last parliamentary polls, and they need more funds to implement those.
The lawmakers, however, opposed allocation of such funds to zila parishads since that will be used by the parishads' administrators, instead of the MPs.
