14 charge sheeted in illegal human organ trade case
Charges have been pressed against 14 people in illegal human organ trade case filed with Kalai Police Station in Joypurhat district in August 2011.
Nur Hossain, officer-in-charge (OC) of the police station, submitted the charge sheet to the Judicial Magistrate's Court Thursday afternoon. As many as 70 people have been made witnesses.
The charge-sheeted accused are Md Abdus Sattar, 38, Golam Mostafa, 37, of Bahuti village, Abdul Mannan 32, Mosharraf Hossain 35, Mokarram Hossain 35 of Joypur-Bahuti village, Akhter Alam 32, Faruk Hossain 25, Zahidul Islam 30, Tozam Uddin 31 of Verandi village, and Shamsul Islam 24 of Bagoil village under Kalai upazila of Joypurhat; Saiful Islam alias Daud, 30, of Mollahpur village under Mollarhat upazila of Bagerhat district; Mahmudur Rahman Sujon, 33, of Dinara village under Nuria upazila of Shariatpur; Nafiz Mahmud, 32, of Uttar Chasara of Fatullah under Narayanganj; and Tareque Azam alias Babul Chowdhury, 45, of Choto Hossainpur Rajaganj under Begumganj upazila of Noakhali.
Police said ten of the accused were arrested from August 20 to September 18 in 2011 and granted bail by the High Court in February this year.
However, names of the doctors and clinics, disclosed by the arrestees during confessional statements before the magistrate, were not mentioned in the charge sheet.
Contacted, OC Nur Hossain, also the investigation officer (IO) of the case, said no evidence of the doctors' involvement in the illegal organ trade was found during investigation.
Those who sold their kidneys and parts of livers are also on the list of the witnesses, he added.
Kalai police arrested three members of human organ trade syndicate on August 20, 2011. A case was filed with the police station on August 29 and later police arrested seven more members of the gang.
