Court asks 8 AL leaders to appear on Mar 2
Judge Abdus Salam Shikder yesterday ordered eight local leaders of Awami League to appear before the Speedy Trial Tribunal in Khulna on March 2 as they have been named as witnesses of the plan for murder of AL leader advocate Manjurul Imam.
The eight leaders are Khulna City AL President and former lawmaker Talukder Abdul Khaleque, General Secretary of Bagerhat district AL Kamruzzaman. Tuku, President of Sadar thana AL Ajmol Ahmed Tapan, President of Sonadanga thana AL Abdul Kalam Azad, President of Khulna city unit of Sramik League Alauddin Al Azad Milon, former lawmaker Begum Mannujan Sufian, President of ward-23 unit Birendra Nath Ghosh and Jubo League leader Selim Munshi.
Abdullah Harun Rumi, eldest son of slain city Awami League president advocate Manjurul Imam and one of the prosecution witnesses of the murder case, named five party leaders as planners of the murder and eight others as witnesses of the plan while submitting deposition in the court on Monday.
Two of the five leaders named by Rumi as planners fled the country after their names were included in the list of corrupt people published by the Anti-Corruption Commission last year. They are general secretary of district Awami League and ex-whip Mostafa Rashidi Shuja and ex-Khulna mayor Kazi Aminul Huq.
Another person named as one of the planners, former general secretary of Khulna District Sports Association Moazzem Rashidi Doja, is an absconding accused in several criminal cases.
Two others, city AL General Secretary Mizanur Rahman Mizan and Ward Commissioner Imam Hasan Chowdhury Moina issued press statements yesterday denying allegation of their involvement in the plan for killing advocate Manjurul Imam.
They said Abdullah Harun Rumi had made false statement to the court on Monday to damage merit of the case, which was investigated twice during the rule of the immediate past government. Neither the complainant nor any of the prosecution witnesses named any Awami League leader as planner for the murder during police investigation, they said.
Incumbent President of Khulna city Awami League Talukder Abdul Khaleque in another press statement demanded impartial investigation into the murder case and arrest of real masterminds and killers for exemplary punishment.
Expressing his ignorance about the murder plan, Talukder Abdul Khaleque requested sons of Manjurul Imam not to fall into 'any trap to damage' merit of their father's murder case.
Meanwhile, Abdullah Harun Rumi yesterday said he is feeling insecure after naming planners and witnesses of the plan for his father's killing.
