Tax official arrested for bribery
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) officials yesterday caught red-handed an assistant tax commissioner while taking bribe from a businessman at the Segunbagicha office of Tax Zone-5 in the capital and handed him over to police.
The tax official, Kazi Ashiqur Rahman, 35, is a resident of 121/1 Muradpur High School Road of Dhaka's Jurain. A case was filed against him.
Maj Emranul Haque Shah, ACC director of Dhaka Zone, told The Daily Star that they conducted the drive in the afternoon following a written allegation by businessman Sheikh Mizanur Rahman of the capital's Siddheswari.
"We caught the tax official red-handed while he was taking Tk 50,000 from the businessman. Besides, Tk 29,500 was seized from a drawer of his desk and he could not show any credible source of the money,” said Maj Emranul.
Quoting Mizanur, the ACC director said Ashiqur had demanded Tk 1 lakh to move his tax return file but later agreed on Tk 75,000.
"Two days ago, Mizanur gave him Tk 25,000 in advance and today [yesterday] he was giving the rest. We were waiting at the office watching over both of them. As soon the money was handed over, we caught Ashiqur," he added.
Rab-3 Commanding Officer MM Anisur Rahman said they accompanied the ACC team upon request for assistance.
Sub-inspector Mehedi Masum of Paltan Police Station said ACC Deputy Director Fazlur Rahman handed the tax official over to them with Tk 79,500 and filed a case.
