Plan to set up farmer markets in all unions

The caretaker government has decided to construct a farmer market in all unions in the country to help growers to sell their farm products at fair price, as part of a plan for building an effective marketing system.
LGRD and Cooperatives Adviser M Anwarul Iqbal said a Tk 20 crore project has been taken up for constructing sheds of the farmer markets designed with a separate portion for women to sell their production.
He unveiled the scheme while addressing an opinion-exchange meeting between Chief Adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed and people of different professions and government officials of five districts--Mymensingh, Kishoreganj, Netrakona, Sherpur and Jamalpur--at Mymensingh stadium.
The LGRD adviser was given responsibility to collect information about problems and prospects of Sherpur and Jamalpur districts and he informed the opinion-exchange meeting about his findings and solutions.
On strengthening local-government system, Iqbal said the work for strengthening the local government has proceeded a long way as he informed that draft for constituting Local Government Commission has been prepared. The draft would be placed in the advisory council meeting.
He said the existing six separate city corporation laws would be made into one law and new municipality law would be made.
He further said a coordinated law for Upazila Parishad and Zila Parishad would be formulated as well as allowances of local-government representatives would be increased.
“The present government wants to gift good democracy to the people,” said the adviser of the interim government, which is carrying out sweeping reforms to get out of the past crises.
Speaking at the meeting, Home Affairs Adviser Maj Gen (retd) MA Matin, who was assigned to collect information of problems and possibilities of Kishoreganj and Netrakona districts, said smuggling of fertiliser would have to be stopped at any cost.
He cited that government has to give about Tk 31 subsidy for import of 1 kg of urea while selling that at around Tk 5.30 per kg.
It will have to be ensured that fertiliser reach farmers properly, he said.
