RU girls continue agitation for security
Students of five female halls at Rajshahi University (RU) have continued their demonstration on the campus demanding immediate measures to beef up security at their dormitories in the wake of an incident of theft at Tapasi Rabeya Hall.
On Tuesday last, a thief sneaked into the hall and stole three mobile phones, a gold chain and injured a female student.
Following the incident, the RU authorities formed a five-member committee headed by Prof Golam Kabir to investigate the incident.
Sources said the committee submitted its report on February 24.
Yesterday, hundreds of students went to the administrative building in the morning to meet Vice-chancellor Prof Altaf Hossain at his office but police prevented them from entering the building in a procession.
After an altercation with police, the agitating students forcibly entered the building and met the vice-chancellor at his office.
They demanded that the probe report be made public.
The students also placed a 10-point demand including removal of hall super, staffs and night guards for their negligence to duty, payment of compensation to the students concerned and strengthening of security at the hall.
RU Pro-VC Prof Mamnunul Keramat, acting registrar Prof Muhammad Shafi and Proctor Enamul Haque were present on the occasion.
After the meeting, the agitating students told newsmen that they rejected the probe report as it was not made public to them.
"We rejected the report as the university authorities and the probe committee members refused to believe that a thief entered the hall on Tuesday," said Monira Sharmin Prithu.
Borna, another agitating student, said, "The authorities had ignored our demand and misbehaved with us adding that we strongly protested the attitudes of the authorities.
The students also threatened to launch tougher movement if the RU authorities fail to meet their 10-point demand.
"We will launch our fresh movement at a press conference today," said Prithu.
Samajtantrik Chhatra Front and Anti-repression Students Forum also rejected the probe report as the committee did not believe the incident.
In separate statements yesterday, they threatened to launch agitation if the authorities fail to ensure security of female students.
