Housewife dies, another fights for life in Jessore
A mother of a six-year-old boy is fighting for life at Jessore Medical College and Hospital as she was stabbed indiscriminately allegedly by her husband for dowry on Friday night.
The victim, Kajol Rekha Rikta, daughter of Habibur Rahman of Daitola village in Jessore Sadar upazila, was married off with Kamal Sheikh of Mudair village 10 years ago.
Her brother Abdur Rouf said, after the marriage, Kamal and his family members often tortured Rikta for Tk one lakh.
On Friday night, Kamal attacked Rikta with sharp weapons at his house, leaving her seriously injured following an altercation over the issue.
She was rushed to Narail Sadar Hospital and then shifted to Jessore Medical College Hospital yesterday as her condition deteriorated, said Rouf.
Rafiqul Islam, officer in-charge at Narail Sadar police station, said steps would be taken against those responsible for the incident if any case is filed in this regard.
Earlier, another housewife, who sustained burn injuries after being set afire for dowry allegedly by husband in Barandipara Lichutala area of Jessore town on Friday night, died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Saturday morning.
The victim was identified as Nayan Begum, wife of Abu Kalam of the area, reports UNB.
Police said, Nayan, daughter of Rabiul Islam was married off with Abu Kalam about three years back. Kalam took Tk 50,000 and furniture from Nayan's father as dowry during the marriage.
Later, he demanded Tk 2 lakh more as dowry from Nayan's parents. As Nayan's family did not meet their demand, Kalam along with his family members used to torture her.
On the fateful night, Kalam and his family members picked up a quarrel with her over the issue. At one stage, they poured kerosene on her body and set her on fire, leaving her seriously injured.
