Chandpur AL leader among three killed

At least three people, including a local Awami League leader, were killed and five others injured in a road accident in Chandina upazila of Comilla yesterday.
The deceased are Prof Mollah Md Riasat Ullah, 65, senior vice-president of Chandpur district Awami League, his nephew Hasan, 25, and Mahfuza Aktar, 30, wife of Saiful Islam of Chandina.
The accident occurred around 10:00am when the driver of a Comilla-bound passenger bus from Homna lost control over the steering and broadsided a stationary truck and hit a rickshaw from behind at Bagur bus stand.
Rickshaw passenger Mahfuza died on the spot while two of his children and five bus passengers sustained injuries in the accident, Chandina police and witnesses said.
Bus passengers Riasat Ullah and Hasan died on their way to Comilla Medical College Hospital (CMCH).
Of the five injured, three were undergoing treatment at the CMCH while the others at Chandina Upazila Health Complex.
Police seized the bus but its driver managed to escape.
Contacted, Jahangir Alam, officer-in-charge of Amtoli Highway Police Station, confirmed the accident.
