Close watch on scamsters
The home ministry has directed the law enforcement and immigration authorities to stay alert so that Tanvir Mahmud, managing director of Hall-Mark Group, and his wife Jasmine Islam, its chairperson, cannot leave the country.
Talking to The Daily Star, police and immigration officials said they received the directives two days ago.
The directives followed the unearthing of Tk 2,686-crore scam at Ruposhi Bangla Hotel branch of the state-owned Sonali Bank.
Photographs, phone numbers and biodata of the couple have been sent to the airports and other exit points of the country, home ministry sources said.
Border Guard Bangladesh authorities have also been alerted.
A Bangladesh Bank probe recently found the Ruposhi Bangla Hotel branch had lent Tk 2,686 crore to Hall-Mark on forged documents.
Following this, the Anti-Corruption Commission launched an investigation into the swindle. It has so far quizzed Tanvir, his wife and many of Hall-Mark Group's officials alongside 17 officials of Sonali Bank.
