Time extension for claims soon
The gazette notification on the time limit extension for submission of applications regarding vested property claims will be issued within a few days, said Law Minister Shafique Ahmed yesterday.
He was talking to representatives of different human rights organisations and civil society at Bangladesh Secretariat. The representatives had arrived to exchange views on the Vested Property Return (Second Amendment) Ordinance-2012 and its speedy implementation.
The cabinet approved the draft of the time limit extension amendment to the ordinance on August 6.
The draft states that claimants of government-listed properties will be able to lodge appeals in 300 days instead of 180 days from the issuance of a gazette notification of such property.
Yesterday, a press release from Association for Land Reform and Development (ALRD) quoted Shafique as saying that tribunals had been set up in almost all districts to implement the law.
Properties of citizens and permanent residents of Bangladesh have been enlisted as vested property, he said.
Shafique said co-sharers of original owners of the property or their (owner's) successors or the people, who protect the owners' interests, will get the vested properties back, and there is no scope of confusion in this regard
The representatives said lakhs of people are in anxiety since no gazette notification has been issued over the time extension since its approval from the cabinet.
Arpito Sampotti Ain Protirodh Andolon President Kamal Lohani and Secretary Advocate Subrata Chowdhury, ALRD Executive Director Shamsul Huda, Bangladesh Hindu Buddha Christian Oikya Parishad Presidium Member Kazal Debnath and Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services Trust Legal Adviser SM Rezaul Karim led the representatives.
