Move for admission without any test sparks protest
The government's decision to do away with admission test for public and private medical colleges and to enrol students on the basis of their SSC and HSC results from this year sparked protest by students and guardians in Dinajpur and Barisal yesterday.
The decision was made at a meeting at the health ministry on Sunday with Health and Family Welfare Minister AFM Ruhal Haque in the chair.
Earlier, the students were enrolled at the medical colleges through admission test and the government last year took a combined medical and dental admission test for both public and private institutions.
In Dinajpur, Around 500 admission seekers brought out a procession in the town on Sunday afternoon protesting the decision. The students along with their guardians again gathered in front of Dinajpur Press Club yesterday morning and formed a human chain for an hour from 10:00am, reports our correspondent.
They demanded that the health ministry withdraw the decision and enrol students at public and private medical colleges through admission test. Otherwise, they threatened to launch an agitation programme.
Later, the students and their guardians went to the deputy commissioner's office and submit a memorandum to the health minister through him.
The admission seekers said they will submit another memorandum to the principal of Dinajpur Medical College today.
Our Barisal correspondent reported that medical admission seekers yesterday staged a demonstration in the city and then formed a human chain in front of Ashwini Kumar Hall demanding withdrawal of the decision to enrol medical students on the basis of their SSC and HSC results.
They also held a rally at the venue with Manisha Chakraborty, convener of Samajtantrik Chhatra Front Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College unit, in the chair. Addressing the rally, the speakers said the government decision to enrol students on the basis of GPA in SSC and HSC examinations is “controversial and unjust'
The urged the authorities concerned to withdraw the decision immediately and restore the previous admission system. They also threatened to continue agitation until the decision is cancelled.
The Sunday's meeting decided that the candidates must have at least a combined GPA of 8 in SSC and HSC examinations to apply for admission to public and private medical colleges.
