Committee for justice wants CID probe
Committee for Justice for Aminul Islam yesterday demanded investigation of the death of the labour leader by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) instead of the Detective Branch (DB) of police in Tangail.
Kalpona Akhter, coordinator of the committee and executive director of Bangladesh Centre for Workers Solidarity (BCWS), made the demand at a press conference at Dhaka Reporters Unity.
Aminul, 41, a trade union leader with the BCWS, disappeared from Ashulia, on the city's outskirt, on April 4. On April 5, police recovered the body from Ghatail of Tangail and it was buried there. The body was exhumed on April 9.
Quoting the autopsy report, sources at Ghatail Police Station and DB police in Tangail said Aminul died from torture.
In a written statement, Kalpona Akhter said it is also being discussed that some officials of a government security agency might also be involved in the "murder".
She said the investigation of the murder case is being hampered as its investigation officer is stationed in Tangail while the main part of the investigation has to be carried out in Dhaka, Ashulia and Savar.
So, the CID should investigate the case, she added.
Senior legal counselor of the American Centre for International Labour Solidarity AKM Nasim, president of Bangladesh Garment Industrial Workers Federation (BGIWF) Babul Akhter and Aminul's family members were also present at the press conference.
They also urged the government to give financial help to the victim's family.
Aminul's daughter Saima Akhter Akhi demanded immediate arrest and trial of her father's killers.
