Make it compulsory
Marriage registration for the Hindus must be made compulsory to reduce chances of marriage-related abuses of women, journalist turned parliamentarian Baby Moudud said yesterday.
“When it is enjoined by our constitution that no religion will be discriminated against, then why are Hindu women being made susceptible to less rights?” she demanded.
Baby Moudud was addressing an award-giving ceremony of United Nations body UN Women, where 10 male college and university students were awarded for writing inspirational essays about preventing violence against women.
“Victims of marriage and dowry-related violence can seek justice if the marriage is registered” she said.
Speakers revealed that girl-children from large families had a higher chance of being pushed into under-age and abusive marriages.
Girls are caged within abusive marriages because they have not been trained to have the skills to fend for themselves, they said.
Abu Sayeed, managing director of the daily Samakal newspaper, said, "Confining girls to house and denying her the right to take care of herself is a form of abuse.”
The 10 winning essayists took an oath to end violence against women.
