Ensure rights of ethnic groups
Speakers at a seminar yesterday urged the government to ensure the basic human rights of the ethnic communities of the country as per the direction of the constitution.
Bangladesh Adivasi Adhikar Andolan organised the seminar at RC Majumdar Arts Auditorium of Dhaka University (DU) marking the 157th anniversary of the Santal Revelation, also known as "Santal Hool," in India.
Speakers said the government should bring forward the stories of the leaders of the Santal Hool so that the young generation can learn from their lives and works.
Bangladesh Adivasi Forum General Secretary Sanjib Drang said more than 20,000 people, mostly farmers, sacrificed their lives during the great rebellion against the British rulers and local landlords that took place at Jharkhand in India between June 30, 1855 and November 10, 1857.
DU History department Prof Mesbah Kamal, also convenor of Bangladesh Adivasi Adhikar Andolan, presided over the programme while researcher Farhat Jahan and writer Altaf Pervez attended among others.
