BNP leader, 4 others held with smuggled Indian jute seeds
Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested five people including a BNP leader in Gobindagnaj upazila and recovered 247 sacks of banned Indian jute seeds worth about Tk 12 lakh from different go-downs possessed by them.
Acting on a tip-off, Rab caught Gobindaganj Pourashava BNP secretary Sanowar Hossain Dipu from his business place at Gobindaganj with inferior quality Indian jute seeds on Saturday. Following his information, they later arrested Biplob Kumar Sarker of village Chalk Gobindapur, Protap Devnath of village Chalk Rahimanpur, Swadesh Kumar Saha of Golapbag Bazaar under Gobindagnaj upazila and Utpal Devnath of Saghata upazila in this connection.
After interrogation, Rab handed them over to Gobindaganj police next evening.
BNP leader Dipu is also an accused in Chhatra League leader Titu murder case, sources said.
The arrested people had been involved in smuggling inferior quality jute seeds from India and they used to sell to innocent farmers of Bangladesh it at high prices as the seeds were pass off as quality jute seeds, Rab said.
