Half-day hartal observed in Sylhet
BNP backed Jatiyatabadi Swechha-sebak Dal imposed eight-hour hartal in Sylhet yesterday with most of the vehicles staying in and most of the shops shut.
Swechhasebak Dal leaders and activists brought out a procession around 10:30am from the city's court point and Zindabazar area, which police obstructed. Law enforcers charged baton and dispersed the activists who retaliated by pelting police with bricks.
Some 10 vehicles were vandalised in different areas in the city while police picked up four activists.
The district and city unit BNP did not support the hartal as the party have been organising programmes separately for the last four months.
Swechhasebak Dal called the hartal after a Dhaka court cancelled its central Vice-President Shamsuzzaman Zaman's bail and sent him to jail in connection with an abduction case.
Princila Parvin Pinki, wife of Sylhet city Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal Joint Secretary Iftekhar Ahmed Dinar, filed the case accusing Zaman and others of kidnapping her husband along with a companion, who went missing on April 3.
