Jute exporters protest tax hike
Raw jute exporters urged the government to withdraw the 'excessively high' taxes on exports.
"It is too high to be able to serve the best interests of exporters," said Mahfuzul Haque, chairman of Bangladesh Jute Association.
The association made the plea after finance minister AMA Muhith proposed to deduct 1.2 percent tax at source of exporters' income, beginning from the next fiscal year.
Bangladesh is the biggest exporter of jute and jute products.
Earnings of raw jute exports fell 41 percent to Tk 1,344.93 crore in July-April from a year earlier, while the volume rose 33 percent to 19.96 lakh bales in the same period.
