A violent storm ripped into six villages in Santhia upazila of the district on Saturday night, damaging at least 200 thatched and tin-roofed houses and two educational institutions
The affected villages are Goyashbari, Mongolgram, Tebaria, Debipur, Shargram and Vobanipur under Vulbaria union.
Upazila administration sources said at least 200 houses were damaged and over 500 trees uprooted at the villages during the storm that lasted for ten minutes from 9:30pm.
Debipur School and College, a primary school and a post office at Goyashbari village collapsed during the twister, sources added.
Md Abdul Aziz, chairman of Vulbaria Union Parishad (UP), said the storm cased extensive damage to houses and trees at six villages of his union. He sough immediate relief for the affected villagers.
Santhia Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Enamul Haque visited the spot yesterday. He assured the affected villagers of all possible help and assistance for their rehabilitation.
Contacted, the UNO said he asked the local UP chairman to prepare a list of the storm-hit people and submit it to his office. “After getting the list, we will take initiative to help the affected people,” the UNO added.
