Gen Moeen to visit India this month
Chief of Army Staff General Moeen U Ahmed is expected to pay a weeklong visit to India in the last week of this month to hold meetings with high officials of the Indian government and military.
Highly placed sources said the army chief was due to visit India last year but had postponed it due to his preoccupations at home and abroad.
This time his visit is almost confirm and officials concerned are making the final arrangements of his tour and discussing with the Indian officials about his meetings with top government officials.
Sources said Moeen is likely to leave Dhaka on February 24 and return home on March 2. Dates and time of his meetings are yet to be finalised.
An important official of the Indian High Commission in Dhaka also confirmed Moeen's visit. The Indian media has already published a number of reports regarding the visit of General Moeen, the official said.
During his visit, Moeen is expected to pay courtesy call to President Pratibha Devisingh Patil, Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Defence Minister AK Antony.
He will also hold meetings with Indian Chief of Army Staff General Deepak Kapoor, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Sureesh Mehta and Chief of Indian Air Force Air Chief Marshal Fali Homi Major.
Sources said the visit of the Bangladesh army chief to India is being considered significant as the army-backed caretaker government in Bangladesh is currently carrying out various important tasks, including anti-corruption drives, reforms and proceeding towards the general elections by December this year.
The army has been playing an important role and extending all-out support to this government to achieve the goals.
The army chief is also expected to visit Ajmeer Sharif and the Tajmahal in Agra.
