Show cause notice on Ctg power plant

The Department of Environment (DoE) yesterday served a show cause notice to Hathazari 100 megawatt Power Plant for polluting the environment.
An enforcement team of DoE, led by its Director (Chittagong) Jafar Alam, made a drive at Hathazari area in the port city yesterday.
During the drive, a canal adjacent to the power plant was found to be polluted by the furnace oil used in the plant, said Jafar Alam.
The oil, while being unloaded from railway wagons, leaks into the canal water, he said.
Moreover, the oil mixed water moves along the canal into river Halda, posing threat to the river's bio diversity, he added.
A notice has been served to the plant manager, Shafiqul Islam, asking as to why punishment measure should not be taken against the power plant, he said.
He also ordered the plant authorities to answer the notice within three days and to stop the leaking of oil into the canal instantly.
