Journalists defer sit-in
Newsmen yesterday deferred their sit-in programme set for today until May 5 as the home minister again assured them of arresting the killers of Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi soon.
However, the journalists will observe the programme on May 6 if the law enforces fail to arrest the killers by May 5.
On March 18, the newsmen had announced the sit-in programme before the home ministry from a grand rally demanding arrest of the killers of the journalist couple by April 7.
The decisions came in a meeting of the leaders of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ), Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ), National Press Club and Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) at the National Press Club.
Hours earlier they met Home Minister Shahara Khatun at her Baily Road residence around 12:00noon on her invitation for tea.
According to meeting sources, the minister made the same old pledges saying that police would arrest the killers very soon as the law enforces have made remarkable progress in investigation.
She, however, did not elaborate further on the said progress.
Meanwhile, law enforces are yet to announce any development or make any arrest in this respect.
Sagar Sarowar, news editor at private TV channel Maasranga, and his wife Meherun Runi, senior reporter of ATN Bangla, were killed in the wee hours on February 11 at their rented apartment in the city's West Rajabazar.
Shahara at the meeting directed police to ensure security of the journalists and stop harassment so that they can discharge their duty uninterruptedly, the sources said.
The minister also directed reinvestigation into all the cases regarding murder of journalists including that of Humayun Kabir Balu, Manik Saha and Sheikh Belal.
BFUJ Presidents Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury and Ruhul Amin Gazi, BFUJ General Secretaries Abdul Jalil Bhuiyan and M Abdullah (acting), DUJ Presidents Abdus Shahid and Omar Faruq, DUJ General Secretaries Mohammad Baker Hossain and Shaban Mahmud, National Press Club's General Secretary Sayed Abdal Ahmed and DRU President Shakhawat Hossain Badsha and General Secretary Sajjad Alam Khan Tapu were present at the meeting with the home minister.
