Freedom fighters and leaders and activists of different socio-cultural and political organisations yesterday demanded early execution of the verdict in the case for killing Kazi Aref Ahmed, one of the key organisers of the Liberation War and founder of the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD).
They made the demand at rallies and discussions arranged in the town and at Daulatpur upazila headquarters to mark the 13th death anniversary of the then JSD president.
JSD Daulatpur unit took out a silent processions in the upazila town in the morning and then arranged a discussion meeting at Kalidaspur village.
JSD Kushtia unit President Golam Mohsin, General Secretary Abdul Alim Sawpan, Daulatpur upazila Awami League Convener Sarwar Jahan Badsha, advocate Abdullah Al Mamun, Bheramara upazila JSD President AFM Golam Faruk, Daulatpur upazila Vice-Chairman Alki Hossain, Nirmul Committee Kushtia unit secretary Asit Kumar Roy spoke, among others.
Kazi Aref Smriti Sangsad and Yakub Ali kalyan Trust also arranged programmes at Philipnagar in the upazila.
Muktijoddha Oikya Parishad held a rally in Khustia town in the afternoon. Addressing the rally, the speakers urged the government to execute the verdict in the Aref murder case without further delay.
An armed gang killed Kazi Aref, Kushtia district JSD president Lokman Hossain, general secretary Yakub Ali, local JSD leader Shamsher Ali and Israil Hossain at a rally in Kalidaspur village in Daulatpur upazila of the district on February 16, 1999.
