Journo couple murder condemned
Different socio-cultural, political and human rights organisations, business bodies and media activists yesterday strongly condemned the brutal murder of the journalist couple, Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi.
Expressing deep shock, they demanded the immediate arrest of and exemplary punishment to the murderers.
They also conveyed their sympathies to the bereaved families and prayed for the eternal peace of the departed souls.
Sagar, a news editor of private TV channel Maasranga Television, and his wife Meherun, a senior reporter of ATN Bangla, were stabbed to death in their West Rajabazar residence in the city in the early hours of Saturday.
They also demanded the government to take initiatives in ensuring security and upbringing of the couple's only child, Mahir Sarowar Megh.
Gono Forum President Dr Kamal Hossain termed the murder an irreparable loss for the country's journalism arena.
Transparency International, Bangladesh Executive Director Dr Iftekharuzzaman and Broadcast Journalists Association, in separate statements, said the murder indicates the vulnerable condition of the country's law and order.
Bangladesh National Women Lawyers Association said the murder could have been prevented if perpetrators of previous murder incidents were duly punished.
Sector Commanders Forum, Liberation War-71, Bangladesh Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association, Bangladesh Mahila Parishad, Ain O Salish Kendra, Karmojibi Nari, Bangladesh Manabadhikar Bastobayan Sangstha, TV Camera Journalist Association, Bangladesh Christian Association, Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal, Samajtantrik Mahila Forum, Islami Oikkya Andolon, Jubo Forum, Bangladesh Mohajir Welfare and Development Committee, Progressive Art and Mass Media Workers Forum, Dhaka University Teachers' Association, Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh, Parbattya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samity, Dhaka University Journalists' Association, Jatiya Sangbadik Sangstha and Bogra Journalists Forum, Dhaka also condoled the deaths.
