Cops didn't kill the two
Chandpur Superintendent of Police (SP) M Shahidullah Chowdhury yesterday said the police firing on January 29 did not kill Abul Hossain Mridha and Limon Choyal.
According to the probe and forensic report, the bullets that killed the two at Chandpur were not fired from arms used by Bangladesh police, he said at a press conference at the district police headquarters after 10 days of the incident.
The police super said demonstrators or someone else from a close range might have shot Limon and Abul dead.
On January 29, the two rickshaw-pullers were killed after police fired on BNP demonstrators in a bid to foil their protest movement.
At least 41 policemen were injured in the incident and of them two are still undergoing treatment at Chandpur Sadar Hospital, said Shahidullah Chowdhury.
Chandpur district administration prevented BNP from holding any procession that day on the premises of Hasan Ali Government High School to avert any untoward situation, the SP said at the conference.
He said BNP activists attacked police after they attempted to barricade the demonstrators. To bring the situation under control police fired 22 tear gas canisters and later fired 105 rounds from shotguns and four rounds from Chinese rifle.
The real story will be revealed after completion of ongoing investigations, the SP said.
