Zia's birth anniversary observed
The main opposition BNP paid homage to late president Ziaur Rahman marking his 76th birth anniversary yesterday.
The party chairperson, Khaleda Zia, flanked by party leaders and workers placed wreaths at the grave of Zia, founder of BNP, at the city's Sher-e-Bangla Nagar at 12:00noon. She also offered prayers there.
The BNP chief also inaugurated a voluntary blood donation programme organised by ZISAS at the grave premises. The party hoisted its flag before its Naya Paltan headquarters.
Voluntary blood donation campaign and free medical treatment were also organised in front of the BNP central office at Naya Paltan.
The BNP has chalked out a 15-day programme to observe the birth anniversary of Ziaur Rahman, including discussions, photo exhibition, blood donation campaign, and cultural events.
Talking to reporters at Zia's grave, BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir termed untrue the prime minister's remarks at a public meeting in Manikganj Wednesday that prices of essentials are now at a tolerable level.
Fakhrul said, “The prime minister made the false statement to divert public attention from the existing crisis”.
