China to help build deep sea port
Outgoing Chinese Ambassador Zhang Xianyi yesterday said China is ready to help Bangladesh build a deep sea port which will immensely help the latter and its neighbours.
Talking to reporters after his farewell call to Foreign Minister Dipu Moni at the foreign ministry in the afternoon, he said China has the technology, financial capacity and strong will to help its friend.
During the meeting, Dipu Moni conveyed Bangladesh's interest in establishing a direct route connecting Bangladesh and China through Myanmar.
She also expressed gratitude for Chinese assistance and support in power, agriculture, infrastructure and telecommunication sectors of Bangladesh.
However, she hoped that China would take measures in balancing trade between the two countries, amounting to US $8 billion this year, as it is heavily tilted towards China.
Zhang Xianyi appreciated Bangladesh's role in UN peacekeeping missions and presented Dipu Moni with a book, “History and Legend of Sino-Bangla Contacts”, he authored.
Chinese embassy sources said the ambassador, having served three years in Bangladesh, is expected to leave tomorrow to join the Chinese mission in Slovenia.
